  • 18th Annual Winter Solstice Procession

    The dance of sun and earth has inspired celebrations of the human spirit, expressed through art and music, throughout the ages. Honouring many cultural traditions, the Annual Winter Solstice Lantern Festival illuminates the longest night of the year with lanterns, fire, singing, drumming, and live music. The procession begins at 6pm in Triangle Square from where the Carnival Band and the Rhythm Spirit Drummers will lead everyone to Ron Basford Park where a fire sculpture and fire performance will take place.

    Warm up inside with the swing jazz genius of Djangoesque or be entranced by the shadow magic of Mind Of a Snail Puppet Co. Enjoy First Nations culture with the Indian Time Drum Group and family dancing with the Carnival Band.

  • Chinese New Year Celebration

    Help Granville Island ring in the Year of the Dragon with traditional Chinese Lion Dancers who will make their way around the Public Market, the Net Loft, the Creekhouse, & Railspur Alley (weather permitting). Participating tenants will hang lucky red envelopes and heads of lettuce above the entrances to their businesses and the dancers will climb up and tear them down, ripping up the lettuce and throwing it back at the business. It is considered very lucky to be hit by the flying lettuce so don't worry if a few rogue pieces fly into your face! The Fortune God will be following the dancers and handing out lucky red envelopes with treats inside to spectators.

     

  • Flowerruption

    On view in the Broom Co. shop, Blackberry Books, and at Circle Craft, ikebana artists will use fresh flowers and branch material to lift your spirits out of winter and toward spring.

  • Granville Island Farmers Market

    They’re ba-ack! The farmers are back in town for the Granville Island Farmers Market, starting June 2 and running every Thursday all the way into October. Come get a taste of some of the best produce BC has to offer: all local, all fresh, and so much to choose from! Tomatoes, potatoes, apples, cherries – well, the list could go all the way down the page, but it’s best to stop by Triangle Square and find out for yourself what this annual outdoor market has to offer.   • Mini Glassblowing Workshops

    Come in to the studio and experience the magic of hot, molten glass! Mini-workshops are for beginners, absolutely no experience needed. Just choose your colours and make a flower of your own.
    Special notes: 14 Years and up only.  Flowers take about 12 hours to cool, so be prepared to return to pick up the piece or have it shipped.

  • Railspur Artisan Market

    Explore the Railspur District of Granville Island, where industrial buildings have been transformed into Vancouver`s most unique and diverse shopping and cultural zones. On October 1st from 11am – 5pm Railspur will also be home to a bustling Artisan Market with day vendors from the Public Market. Showcasing artisans represent the highest quality of locally produced art, craft and food products. Meet Railspur resident artists, peek into artist's studios, check out some demonstrations, and get some of your Christmas shopping done way early!

    Featured Free Activities:

    Workshop: Monika Sadryna, owner and operator of Sadryna Design who creates leather belts, handbags, coats and pants will offer free bracelet and bookmark workshops.

    Demonstration: Izabela Sauer from Alarte Silks will demonstrate painting on large silk pieces. She will also show examples of the ancient Japanese pleating technique known as Shibori. These techniques combined with vibrant colours creates wearable silk sculptures in the form of shawls, scarves, and other garments.

    Behind the Scenes: Masa Shiroki, Artisan Sake Maker, will describe how rice is used to make premium sake to complement the seasonal flavours of local west coast foods.

    Create your own original spin art on a t-shirt using our one of a kind, made by us, human powered spin art bike.

  • Winterruption 2012

     Winterruption on Granville Island is celebrating its seventh annual, truly unique Vancouver winter festival. The magic is in the mix as we once again celebrate our local and international artists of all disciplines.
    Bring your kids to Carousel Theatre`s classic tale of Aesop’s Fables or visit our Kids Zone where Vancouver International Children`s Festival presents the rhythmic soul of Kutapira; Arts Umbrella showcases their theatre program with Theatre Fix; and the internationally renowned Indigenous company, Red Sky, returns with The Great Mountain.
    Artists and artisans fill the galleries, nooks and crannies of Granville Island. There are exhibitions and open studios around every corner! ReVision at the Creekhouse is exhibiting recycled, salvaged, or found materials transformed into amazing art! Dalbergia Wood + Fine Objects Studio in Railspur Alley is presenting Woodenough, a wood exhibition, sharing techniques and exploring new frontiers in the world of wood. Continuing Studies at Emily Carr University of Art and Design is offering a behind-the-scenes tour of the University as well as a Drop-In Life Drawing workshop.
    The Island is alive with theatre and dance. Visit the Granville Island Stage where the Arts Club Theatre Company is presenting Intimate Apparel, a richly textured love story by Lynn Nottage. Or expect the unexpected as some of Vancouver's favourite dancers pop up in unusual spaces all over the Island.

  • Yuletide on Granville Island

    December is upon us again, and this year we’ll be spreading our Yuletide cheer inside and out! Festive musicians are ready to add some musical flare to your holiday shopping and strolling. Yuletide on Granville Island just wouldn’t be the same without the rascally Gingerbread Boy spreading his routine mischief and mayhem! Musicians will be featured inside the Public Market and Net Loft, and outdoors in Triangle Square and Railspur Alley, while the Gingerbread Boy will be running as fast as he can in and around the Public Market.  See the schedule below to find out the times and locations of your favourite performers.
